Adult Learners Week is always a great chance to celebrate success in the world of adult learning but this year it has occurred as the new coalition government is finding its feet. This meant that John Hayes, the new minister of state for Further Education , Skills and Lifelong Learning turned up at the NIACE policy conference this week and said some very positive things about the value of lifelong learning. Everyone seemed pleasantly surprised – but ‘the proof of the puddling is in the funding’ ! He will have some fights with Treasury to come and he will have to defend the final government decision.
Meantime press rumours are flying around Agencies and Quangos to be chopped. That will unsettle the alliances of key organisations pressing forward to ensure technology gets used well in education and training. Announcement due early next week.
