The tradition of decorating the wells in Derbyshire goes back into the mists of time and is probably linked to thanksgiving for water over the long hot summers (well there must have been some of those!).
The ‘dressing’ of the wells is actually a collage made of petals, leaves and other natural materials pressed into clay held in a wooden frame.
Each town or village has a well dressing weekend and associated festivities. In the case of Wirksworth these include a carnival, a running race and a wheelbarrow.
